Student’s Persuasive Essay Gets Attention of National Charity

June 5, 2019 - Imlay Elementary School 6th grader Anthony Garcia-Izquierdo wrote a persuasive essay encouraging his classmates to donate to the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) in honor of his uncle, who passed away from cancer. His classmates voted his essay the best, and donated the $436.48 they had earned in a “penny war” with the other 6th grade classrooms to the charity. Anthony’s story caught the attention of the AACR, which turned his essay into a “reader’s theater”-style video, featuring scientists and healthcare professionals. His teacher, Deb Luther, also launched a fundraiser for the AACR on her Facebook page. Learn more and watch the video here.
